Organize Your Book with Groups, Sub-groups and Tags

Keep a whole book in view and move chapters around as the story changes.

  • Windows and Mac

A chapter is dragged to a new place in the sheet list, then a sub-group called Act I is created inside a group.

Recorded in QuillSpace for Windows. The Mac steps are below.

Step by step on Windows

  1. Hover over the Groups header in the project sidebar and click + to add a group. In the Add New Group dialog you can also pick a Parent Group.
  2. Right-click a group and choose Add Sub-Group to nest parts, acts or arcs as deep as you need.
  3. Drag a chapter card up or down in the sheet list to reorder it.
  4. Drag a card onto a group in the sidebar to move it there. The group lights up while you drag.
  5. Right-click a card and choose Manage Tags to tag it, for example by point of view or draft status. Tags show on the card.

Tips for Windows

  • Click Back to All, then Last 7 days in the Library, to see every sheet you edited this week across all projects.
  • Deleting a group also deletes its sub-groups, but never your writing: the sheets move to Ungrouped Sheets.
  • Groups can be dragged into a new order too, so the sidebar can follow the shape of your book.

Step by step on Mac

  1. Right-click your project in the sidebar and choose New Group, or choose File › New Group (⌥⌘N).
  2. Right-click a group and choose New Subgroup to nest parts, acts or arcs as deep as you need.
  3. Drag a sheet up or down in the middle column to reorder it. This works while Sort By is set to Manual.
  4. Drag a sheet onto a group to move it inside, or onto another project in the sidebar to move it there.
  5. Right-click a sheet and choose Tags › Edit Tags… to tag it. Click a tag in the sidebar’s Tags section to see every sheet that has it.

Tips for Mac

  • Right-click a project or group and choose Show as Index Cards to plan on cards. Drag a card to reorder it, or drop it onto a group card to move it inside.
  • Deleting a group never deletes writing: its sheets and subgroups move up one level.
  • Recent in the Library lists the sheets you edited most recently, across all projects.

As deep as you need, on Windows and Mac. Sub-groups can contain their own sub-groups, with no fixed limit.

What happens to my sheets if I delete a group?

Nothing is deleted. On Windows the sheets move to Ungrouped Sheets. On Mac the group’s sheets and subgroups move up one level.

Can I filter sheets by tag?

On Mac, yes: click a tag in the Tags section of the sidebar to list every sheet that has it. On Windows, not yet; tags show on each sheet card.
