Set Word Count Goals and Keep Your Streak

Set a daily, weekly and project goal, and watch the book grow one session at a time.

Step by step on Windows

  1. Set a project goal and deadline when you create the project, or right-click the project and choose Edit. Fill in Project Word Goal (Optional) and Project Deadline (Optional).
  2. Open Settings and go to the Daily Goal tab. Enter your Daily Word Target and click Save Daily Goal. Do the same on the Weekly Goal tab.
  3. Click Statistics above the editor to open Goals & Statistics: your writing streak, the words you wrote today and this week, your project goal, and a chart of the last 30 days across all projects.
  4. Click the goal ring next to the project title in the sidebar to see how far along the book is.

Tips for Windows

  • Set a daily goal you can hit on a busy day. Any day you add words keeps your streak going, even if you fall short of the goal.
  • In the goal ring, Share Progress... copies a short line with your word count and progress to the clipboard, ready to paste into a message or a post.
  • Weeks run from Sunday to Saturday, and only words you add count. Cutting text never lowers your daily total.

Step by step on Mac

  1. Right-click the project and choose Edit Project…. Under Goal, set a Word goal and turn on Deadline if you have one. Click Save.
  2. Open Settings (⌘,), go to Goals, and set your Daily word goal and Weekly word goal.
  3. Choose Window › Writing Statistics, or click the chart button at the bottom of the sidebar, to see your streak, today and this week against your goals, the last 30 days, and the pace each project needs.
  4. Click Goal in the toolbar above the sheet list to see how far along the book is.

Tips for Mac

  • Set a daily goal you can hit on a busy day. Any day you add words keeps your streak going, even if you fall short of the goal.
  • In the Goal popover, Share Progress… opens the macOS share menu with a short line about your progress.
  • Sheets marked as Reference do not count toward the project goal.
