Write with Focus Mode, Typewriter Mode and Fullscreen

Dim everything except the paragraph you are writing, and keep your line in the middle of the screen.

  • Windows and Mac

A chapter with a large drop cap. Focus mode dims every paragraph except the current one while new text is typed.

Recorded in QuillSpace for Windows. The Mac steps are below.

Step by step on Windows

  1. Click the gear at the bottom left of the sidebar to open Settings, and stay on the General tab.
  2. Turn on Focus Mode to dim every paragraph except the one you are writing.
  3. Turn on Typewriter Mode to keep the line you are typing centered on screen.
  4. Optional: turn on Drop Cap for a large first letter at the start of the sheet.
  5. Right-click the title bar above the editor and choose Fullscreen. Press Esc, or click Exit Fullscreen, to come back to the layout you had.

Tips for Windows

  • Want the sidebar gone without going fullscreen? Choose Editor Only from the View Mode button.
  • Focus Mode and Drop Cap work in the rich text editor, which is the default. If you switched Editor Type to Markdown, switch back to see them.
  • Pair Focus Mode with a narrower page: see Dark Mode, Page Width and Language.

Step by step on Mac

  1. Open the View menu.
  2. Choose Focus Mode (⇧⌘F) to dim every paragraph except the one you are writing.
  3. Choose Typewriter Mode (⌃⌘T) to keep the line you are typing centered on screen.
  4. Optional: choose Drop Cap for a large first letter at the start of the sheet and after each heading.
  5. Press ⌘3 for Editor Only, then choose View › Enter Full Screen to fill the screen.

Tips for Mac

  • The same switches are in Settings (⌘,), under Editing.
  • Pair Focus Mode with a narrower page from View › Text Width: see Dark Mode, Page Width and Language.
  • Press ⌘1 to bring all the columns back.

Frequently asked questions

Does Focus mode change my text?

No. It only changes how the page looks while you write. Turn it off and every paragraph is back at full strength.

Can I use Focus mode and Typewriter mode together?

Yes, on Windows and Mac. Many writers keep both on while drafting: the current paragraph stays bright and in the middle of the screen.
